ABSTRACT The Crop-Livestock Integration system has sustainable potential. But pests such as the defoliating caterpillar Spodoptera frugiperda (J. E. Smith) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) can reduce the productivity of this system. The objective was to report transgenic maize and Brachiaria brizantha (A. Rich.) (Poaceae) plants attacked by S. frugiperda in the Crop-Livestock Integration system. Feroz VIP3 ® transgenic maize (SYN8A98 TLTG Viptera) and B. brizantha MG-5 Xaraés plants attacked by S. frugiperda were evaluated 20 days after planting, weekly and for 28 days. The transgenic maize plants were less attacked by S. frugiperda than those of B. brizantha. The negative impact of this pest on B. brizantha suggests the planning and adopting strategies for its control, such as the use of traps, resistant cultivars, and biological or chemical products, minimizing losses in animal production and, consequently, in human food.

ABSTRACT. There is currently a lack of information in the literature on the integrated production of macauba (Acrocomia aculeata) and soybean (Glycine max) crops, and the importance of expanding integrated production systems; therefore, the objective of this work was to identify the effects of macauba shading on growth, development, and productivity of different soybean cultivars. The experiment was carried out in a randomized block design in a factorial scheme (4 × 2), with four cultivars and two production systems (monoculture and crop-forest integration), and four replicates per treatment. All soybean cultivars in the crop-forest integration system showed plant stagnation due to the shade level of the palm trees, as well as a reduction in the leaf area index and chlorophyll content in the leaves. Regarding reproductive parameters, grain, and oil yield, the cultivars responded differently between the production systems, revealing an interaction between the genotype and the environment. Our methodology was not favorable to soybean production; therefore, the management of spacing between palm trees and the selection of soybean genotypes that are more adapted to shaded environments are strategies that can allow for the integrated production of these species.

Abstract Background Amaranthus palmeri is an economically important plant species worldwide. The rapid growth and competitive potential of crops make A. palmeri a major problem. Studies on the dissemination potential of this weed in Brazil and worldwide are necessary to identify the regions with high climatic potential. Similarly, we analyzed the behavior of the species in the face of predicted climate change. Studies of this type can be performed using ecological niche modeling. Objective This work aimed to determine areas with climatic suitability for A. palmeri in the present and future climates in Brazil and globally. Methods We projected the potential distribution of A. palmeri based on the environmental requirements and stress parameters that limit this species in Brazil. Results For the current climate, our model identified regions with favorable climatic suitability for A. palmeri on most continents. The results showed that the suitability of A. palmeri in the Brazilian territory will decrease owing to predicted climate change. The future model highlighted decreases in the suitable northern, northeastern, and midwestern areas. An annual study of the occurrence of A. palmeri using the weekly growth index predicted by the model showed great potential for the species throughout the year, with a decrease in the driest months (July to August), indicating the preference of the species for moist soils. Tropical and subtropical zones are currently experiencing a reduction in suitable areas because of climate change in northeastern Brazil and western Australia. Temperate zone sites have potential areas of expansion for A. palmeri (northern USA, Russia, and China) under climate change. Conclusions Based on the results of this study, management strategies should be planned to contain the global spread of A. palmeri.

RESUMO: Foi proposto avaliar dois protocolos (PA e PB) para obtenção de plasma rico em plaquetas (PRP) canino quanto a celularidade. Foram utilizados 20 cães sadios e coletadas amostras sanguíneas, sendo acondicionados em dois tubos de citrato de sódio a 3,2%. O PA utilizando centrifugação dupla com 210 xG e 370 xG e PB utilizando centrifugação dupla com 140 xG e 330 xG. Amostras de PRP dos protocolos foram destinadas a contagem plaquetária, eritrocitária e leucocitária em câmara de Neubauer, contagem diferencial leucocitária e observação morfológica plaquetária em esfregaços sanguíneos. Analisou-se os dados (médias e desvios padrão) pelo Teste t com 95% de probabilidade (p<0,05) utilizando-se correlação de Pearson para testar a relação entre a contagem de plaquetas e eritrócitos, plaquetas e leucócitos e leucócitos em relação aos eritrócitos. Houve correlação negativa muito fraca entre plaquetas e leucócitos (ρ= -0,03), negativa fraca entre plaquetas e eritrócitos (ρ= -0,3) e correlação positiva forte entre leucócitos e eritrócitos (ρ=0,75). Embora o PB não tenha alcançando a média de um milhão de plaquetas desejado (979300 ± 79631 células/µL), ambos os protocolos, A e B (4,42 ± 1,61 e 3,85 ± 1,55 vezes mais plaquetas que o sangue total, respectivamente) (p<0,05), foram eficientes em concentrar plaquetas. A ativação plaquetária esteve presente em 26,55 ± 6,72 % das plaquetas do PA e 26,25 ± 7,03 % nas do PB (p>0,05). PA e PB apresentaram baixa concentração eritrocitária (p>0,05) e PA apresentou mais leucócitos (p<0,05) que PB, com maiores concentrações de basófilos, segmentados e linfócitos.

ABSTRACT: This study aimed to evaluate two protocols (PA and PB) that are used to obtain canine platelet-rich plasma (PRP) for cellularity. Twenty healthy dogs were used. Blood samples were collected and placed in two tubes of 3.2% sodium citrate. PA used double centrifugation at 210 x g, and 370 x g and PB used double centrifugation with 140 x g and 330 x g. The PRP samples from the protocols were examined in terms of their platelet, erythrocyte, and leukocyte count in the Neubauer chamber, differential leukocyte count and platelet morphological observation in blood smears. Data (mean and standard deviation) were analyzed with the 95% probability t-test (P <0.05) using Pearson’s correlation to test the relationship between platelets and erythrocytes, platelets, and leukocytes, and the leukocyte count versus the erythrocytes. Very weak negative correlation between platelets and leukocytes (p= -0.03), weak negative correlation between platelets and erythrocytes (p= -0.3) and a strong positive correlation between leukocytes and erythrocytes (ρ = 0.75) were noted. Although, BP did not reach the desired mean of one million platelets (979300 ± 79631 cells / μL), both protocols, A and B (4.42 ± 1.61 and 3.85 ± 1.55 times more platelets than total blood, respectively) (p <0.05) were efficient in concentrating platelets. Platelet activation was present in 26.55 ± 6.72% of the PA platelets and 26.25 ± 7.03% in PB (p> 0.05). PA and PB presented low erythrocyte concentration (p> 0.05), and PA had more leukocytes (p <0.05) than PB, with higher concentrations of basophils that were segmented, and lymphocytes.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a eficácia de armadilha de garrafa Pet vermelha contendo compostos voláteis alcoólicos atrativos, no controle massal da broca-do-café (Hypothenemus hampei). As avaliações foram realizadas em quatro lavouras de café, durante dois anos. Foram distribuídas 900 armadilhas de garrafa Pet, pintadas de vermelho, em três das quatro lavouras; uma lavoura sem armadilhas foi usada como controle. O broqueamento dos frutos (%) foi determinado nessas lavouras. Houve redução do broqueamento de frutos nas lavouras com armadilhas, da safra 2007/2008 para a safra 2008/2009. As maiores densidades da broca-do-café nas armadilhas foram observadas nos estádios de floração e de frutos chumbinho. A armadilha de garrafa Pet vermelha é eficaz no controle massal da população da broca-do-café, por reduzir a percentagem de frutos broqueados em 57%; entretanto, essa redução não é suficiente para manter as densidades da broca abaixo do nível de controle.

The objective of this work was to evaluate the efficacy of red PET-bottle traps, containing attractive alcoholic volatile compounds, in the mass control of coffee berry borer (Hypothenemus hampei). The evaluations were carried out in four coffee crops, during two years. Nine hundred PET-bottle traps, painted red, were distributed in three of the four coffee crops; one crop without traps was used as a control. Holes drilled into berries (%) were determined in these crops. There was a reduction in drilled berries in crops with traps, from the 2007/2008 harvest to the 2008/2009 harvest. The highest coffee berry borer densities in traps was observed in the flowering and small-green berries stages. The red PET-bottle trap is efficient in the mass control of the coffee berry borer population, since it reduces the percentage of drilled berries in 57%; however, this reduction is not enough to keep borer densities below the control level.
